How’s your day going so far? If you said same old, same old or if you said not good, your office must not have gotten the memo. Today is National Fun at Work Day. Don’t believe us? Look it up online. And since today is a day when the rules are a little more lax, you (probably) won’t get into trouble for surfing the web during business hours.
What’s the point of National Fun at Work Day? According to Adrian Gostick and Scott Christopher, authors of The Levity Effect: Why It Pays to Lighten Up, “If people are having fun, they’re going to work harder, stay longer, maintain their composure in a crisis and take better care of the organization.”
Further, “An increasing body of research demonstrates that when leaders lighten up and create a fun workplace, there is a significant increase in the level of employee trust, creativity and communication — leading to lower turnover, higher morale and a stronger bottom line.”
If you’re finding out a little too late in the day to formally do anything today to celebrate, mark your calendar now for next year. National Fun at Work Day always falls on January 28. Can’t wait till then? International Fun at Work Day is April 1. Or, as we like to call it, April Fool’s Day.
